Rear Admiral Georg W. von Maltzen (German Navy)

Commander Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (COM SNMG1)

RAdm Von MaltzenRear Admiral (lower half) Georg W. von Maltzan was in 1953 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, and entered the German Navy in July 1973. After officer formation and commissioning, he joined the Fast Patrol Boat Flotilla for a total of 8 years ending in the command of S47 JAGUAR from October 1980 to September 1984.

In December 1986, Rear Admiral von Maltzan joined the Destroyer Flotilla in which he served for more than 10 years. Consecutively, he was the Principal Warfare Officer Air, Operations Officer, and Executive Officer on board Destroyers 103B class (Charles F. Adams class) as well as Commanding Officer of DDG ROMMEL (D187) from October 1993 to September 1995. He was the Squadron Commander of the 1st German Destroyer Squadron (Destroyer 103B class) and of the 1st German Frigate Squadron (Frigate 124 class) from August 2000 to February 2004. He participated in Operation SHARP GUARD in 1994 and 1995 and in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in 2002 and 2003.

Rear Admiral von Maltzan’s shore assignments include duties as Course Director at the Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr (Federal Armed Forces Command and Staff College) 1995 to 1997 and Branch Chief Operations in the MOD/Navy Staff 2004 to 2006.

Rear Admiral von Maltzan served for 9 years in Paris, France. From 1985 to 1986, he attended the French War College, and then was assigned three times to the German Embassy as assistant naval attaché (1991 to 1993), as naval attaché (1997 to 2000), and as defence attaché (2006 to 2009).

Rear Admiral von Maltzan assumed duty as Chief of Staff HQ CINCGERFLEET (Glücksburg) in October 2009 and was assigned Deputy Director Operations at German Naval Headquarters (Rostock) in October 2012.

Rear Admiral von Maltzan’s personal decorations include the Cross of Honor of the Bundeswehr “Gold”, NATO medal “Former-Yugoslavia”, Bundeswehr operations Medal “Operation Enduring Freedom”, Commander of the “Ordre national de mérite” (France), and Commander of the “Orde van Oranje-Nassau” (Netherlands).

Rear Admiral von Maltzan is married to Bieny and they have 4 grown-up daughters. He and his wife live close to Rostock. His interests are history and classical music; he enjoys playing golf and nordic-walking.
