Cabral disrupts Somali Pirate attack.

NATO Task force disrupts pirate attack. The Portuguese frigate NRP ÁLVARES
CABRAL disrupted a Somali pirate attack on a regional cargo dhow.
The dhow reported being pursued by a pirate skiff and requested immediate
assistance.

NATO and Maritime partners visit Beijing
and strengthen global fight against piracy
Naval officers from NATO’s Maritime Command in Northwood, North West
London returned from Beijing this week having attended an international
maritime co-operation counter-piracy meeting hosted by the Chinese
Ministry of Defence.

Exchange of Maritime Command for NATO Ships Fighting Piracy in
the Gulf of Aden
Today
saw an exchange of maritime command between Standing NATO Maritime Group
2 (SNMG2) to SNMG1 for Operation Ocean Shield - the code name for NATO’s
counter piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden. NATO warships have been
operating in the Gulf of Aden for the last 8 months following a sharp
increase in pirate attacks on maritime trade passing through the area.

NATO flagship evacuates casualty from merchant ship in pirate waters
On
31 October, the NATO Flagship in the Gulf of Aden, HMS Cornwall,
received an emergency call over the radio from MV APL Hamburg and as she
was only some 40 nm away, sprang to her aid. A crew member was
critically ill and needed medical assistance.
The Royal Navy frigate is currently part of NATO’s Operation Ocean
Shield task group combating piracy off the coast of Somalia.

Secretary General of NATO visits Libeccio in Abu Dhabi
On
Friday 30th October 2009, the Secretary General of NATO, Mr Anders Fogh
Rasmussen was a guest of the Italian frigate LIBECCIO in Abu Dhabi. He
was accompanied by the Chairman of the North Atlantic Military Committee
(NAC), Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola, the Permanent Representatives of
Nations on the North Atlantic Council and many ministers from the United
Arab Emirates. This visit was organized as part of the Istanbul
Cooperation Initiative (ICI) Members conference.

Sea Cadets Trafalgar Day Parade, Chesham

On Sunday 18th October 2009 Chiltern Sea Cadet Unit based in Chesham,
Buckinghamshire hosted the Oxford & Buckinghamshire District Trafalgar
Day Parade. The eight Sea cadet units all mustered in the Elgiva Theatre
car park at 1030 and fell in to their squads. There was a guard of 36
with a Colour Party parading the Chiltern Unit Colour.

Visit Belgian Minister of Defence

Mr Pieter de Crem, Belgian Minister of Defence accompanied by his
Political and Military Adviser visited MCC Northwood.
In the morning of the same day the MOD visited the EU OHQ in Northwood.
He was received by the Deputy Commander, Vice-Admiral H.J. Witthauer and
Chief of Staff Rear-Admiral H. Ort and subsequently briefed by Cdre
Helseth, Deputy Chief of Staff Operations.

Counter Piracy Commanders meet in Gulf of Aden
The
Commanding Officers of the three largest Counter Piracy Task Forces in
the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean met on board the EUNAVFOR flagship
HNLMS Evertsen on October 26 in the Internationally Recommended Transit
Corridor in the Gulf of Aden, one of the world’s busiest shipping routes
between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

SNMCMG1
set record in bad weather


SNMCMG1 sailed a record distance, in one stretch, to escape a growing
storm and maintain their busy programme.
Standing NATO Mine Countermeasure Group 1 was about to arrive in Ponta
Delgada, Azores, when a weather forecast rolled off the printer. The
report detailed two lows heading for the area around the Azores and our
proposed navigation track to main land Europe.
